Justin Cobb - Chairman
Justin P. Cobb accepted the chair at Imperial based at Charing Cross and Ravenscroft Park Hospital in 2005 after being a consultant at the Middlesex and UCH since 1991.
| He studied medicine at Magdalen College, Oxford and trained in surgery and then orthopaedics in London at St Thomas’s and then The Middlesex Hospital and The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. He wrote his Masters thesis on ‘Surgery and Osteosarcoma’ for which he was awarded a Hunterian Professorship in 1992. |
| At Middlesex he took over Sir Rodney Sweetnam’s oncology practice as part of the London Bone Tumour Service. While continuing to work closely with Gordon Blunn and Paul Unwin at BME, Stanmore and SIW, he also collaborated with Brian Davies at Imperial developing robots to allow surgery to be performed more accurately. From the first grant obtained in 1992, it would be almost a decade before the first fully functional robotic system was tested clinically. His current research interests are centred on the hip and knee: developing devices still to enable rapid accurate surgery, but also investigating the anatomy of both these major joints to determine why joints fail and whether early intervention may indeed prevent progression. |
Andrew Shimmin - Chairman
The Great Debate is rapidly becoming one of the few, very special orthopaedic conferences. It is the range of topics and the ability for audience for audience interaction which makes it unique. |
| The location certainly adds to the experience. At the end of the two days we will all have benefited for hearing the varying views of the invited local and international faculty debated, but more importantly we will know the view of all our colleagues in the audience and know where our individual opinions fit in comparison. This will be two days well spent! |
